What a QA specialist does
A QA specialist keeps the quality system running day to day. Unlike inspectors and technicians, who check products, QA specialists mostly work with documents and processes: they review records, manage deviations and change controls, maintain SOPs, coordinate training and support audits.
The title is especially common in pharmaceuticals, biotech, medical devices and clinical research. O*NET even lists “QA Specialist” among the titles reported by regulatory affairs specialists, whose tasks include tracking quality metrics, taking part in audits and recommending how product complaints should be handled.
Typical responsibilities
- Reviewing batch, device history or test records before release
- Managing deviations, nonconformances and CAPA records
- Writing, revising and routing SOPs through document control
- Assessing change requests for quality impact
- Coordinating training records
- Preparing for and supporting internal, customer and regulatory audits
- Tracking quality metrics for management review
“Quality specialist” is a broader label used in manufacturing and services for similar work, sometimes with more hands-on testing.

How AskDona helps
QA specialists spend much of their day reading records against requirements. AskDona reads batch records, deviations, CAPA files and SOPs against the requirement you choose and shows which items are evidenced and which are missing, citing the page, so reviews go faster and nothing slips past. Run a sample document-review evidence check on a record type you review weekly. AskDona shows the evidence; your QA team decides.
Editor’s note: There is no BLS category called “QA specialist”; the pay figures come from related O*NET categories and the ASQ survey headline. The ASQ figure covers all respondents and is not specific to specialists. Busy periods are typical patterns, not survey data.
