What the Japanese Pharmacopoeia is
The Japanese Pharmacopoeia (JP) is the official book of drug standards in Japan, issued by MHLW as a public notice. It contains general notices, general rules for preparations, general tests, and monographs that set quality specifications for drug substances and products. Products marketed in Japan must meet JP requirements where a monograph applies, in the same way that US products must meet USP–NF.
Current status: JP19 is out
According to MHLW’s JP page (MHLW):
| Edition | Status |
|---|---|
| 19th edition (JP19) | Notified April 10, 2026 (MHLW Notification No. 193). Errata dated June 29, 2026 and September 30, 2026. No English version listed yet. |
| 18th edition (JP18) | First Supplement December 12, 2022; Second Supplement June 28, 2024. English versions available for the main volume and both supplements. |
| 20th edition | In preparation; basic policy dated August 27, 2026. |
For US companies, the practical gap is language: JP19 is in force in Japanese, while the most recent English text on the MHLW page is JP18 and its supplements. Teams relying on English should check each JP19 change in the Japanese original.
Where to find it
- MHLW JP page: Japanese PDFs of JP19, JP18 and JP17, plus English versions of JP18 and JP17.
- NIHS JP database (jpdb.nihs.go.jp): older editions and English versions of JP14 to JP16.
- PMDA: technical information and reference standard information.
The JP19 PDFs are large and split into several files, so plan how you will index them.
Copyright and reuse: why this row is “check required”
The MHLW JP page shows a general MHLW copyright notice and links to the ministry’s terms. MHLW’s general policy applies the Public Data License 1.0 where no other rights notice appears, but excludes content with separate terms and leaves third-party rights to the user (MHLW). Our source list rates the JP as check required because:
- The JP contains figures, spectra and reference data that may include third-party material.
- Use terms may differ by document (for example, English translations or NIHS-hosted files).
- A pharmacopoeia is reference content that users rely on verbatim, so errors introduced by reformatting matter.
Using the JP in AI and RAG
- Confirm terms for each file you ingest (MHLW main text, English translation, NIHS files).
- Keep edition and supplement tags on every monograph chunk; JP18 and JP19 can differ.
- Preserve tables and units exactly; do not let summarization change limits or methods.
- Apply errata to the indexed text and record which erratum was applied.
- Answer with citations to the monograph and edition, not paraphrased limits.
Common mistakes
- Using JP18 English text after JP19 took effect.
- Ignoring errata issued after notification.
- Treating spectra and figures as freely reusable.
- Summarizing acceptance criteria instead of quoting them.
Checklist
- Identify JP monographs relevant to your products
- Compare JP19 changes with your current specifications
- Check reuse terms for each JP file before ingestion
- Tag edition, supplement and erratum on indexed text
- Re-check when JP19 English becomes available
How AskDona helps
AskDona compares your specifications and test methods with the JP monographs and general tests you load, and flags differences with citations to both documents. Run a sample specification-to-JP check on one product. AskDona shows the evidence; your QC and regulatory teams decide.
Editor’s note: Edition dates come from MHLW’s JP page as read on the date below. Our “check required” rating is a first-pass judgment, not a legal opinion; confirm terms with MHLW before ingesting JP content into commercial AI products.
