What design and product quality engineers do

These engineers bring quality into a product before it reaches manufacturing.

Medical devices: design controls under the QMSR

In medical devices, design quality engineers are central to design controls. Since February 2, 2026, FDA’s amended 21 CFR Part 820 incorporates ISO 13485:2016 by reference, as noted in FDA’s Computer Software Assurance guidance reissued for the new rule. Design quality engineers make sure design inputs, outputs, reviews, verification, validation, transfer and changes are documented and traceable, and that risk management runs through every stage.

A day in the job

TimeTypical activity
MorningProduct team stand-up; review open risk items
Late morningReview a verification protocol: are acceptance criteria traceable to requirements?
AfternoonDesign review meeting as the independent quality reviewer
Late afternoonUpdate the risk file or traceability matrix; assess a proposed design change

Product quality engineers spend more time on field returns, complaint trends and supplier or manufacturing changes that affect the product.

Who you work with

  • R&D / design engineers: daily.
  • Systems and software engineers: on requirements and verification.
  • Regulatory affairs: on submission content.
  • Manufacturing and process quality: at design transfer.
  • Clinical and human factors teams (devices).
  • Customer service and complaint handling (product quality).

Busy periods

Typical patterns rather than measured statistics:

  • Design phase gates and design reviews.
  • Before regulatory submissions, when the design history file must be complete.
  • Design transfer and launch.
  • Field issues or recalls, for product quality engineers.

Skills you need

  • Requirements engineering and traceability
  • Risk management (FMEA, fault tree analysis; ISO 14971 in devices)
  • Verification and validation planning; statistical sample sizes
  • Reliability engineering basics
  • Clear technical writing
  • Knowledge of design control requirements (ISO 13485 / QMSR for devices)

Salary and job outlook

BLS reports these roles within industrial engineers: median $102,440 in May 2025, 12% projected growth to 2035. ASQ’s 2024 survey reported a $115,000 median across all quality professionals.

Career path

  1. Quality Engineer or Design Engineer → Design / Product Quality Engineer
  2. Senior Design Quality Engineer or Reliability Engineer
  3. Product Quality Manager or Quality Engineering Manager
  4. Director of Quality or R&D quality leadership

Checklist: what hiring managers look for

  • Worked on at least one product from concept to launch
  • Owned a risk file or FMEA
  • Wrote or reviewed verification and validation protocols
  • Comfortable with traceability matrices
  • CQE or CRE, depending on focus

How AskDona helps

A design history file is only as good as its traceability. AskDona reads requirements, risk files, verification and validation reports and design review minutes together and flags requirements without verification, risks without controls or reviews without decisions, with citations to the page. Run a sample design history file review before your next phase gate. AskDona shows the evidence; your design and quality teams decide.

Editor’s note: BLS does not report design or product quality engineers separately. The QMSR effective date is taken from FDA’s reissued CSA guidance; consult the regulation and FDA’s QMSR materials for detailed design control requirements. Busy periods are typical patterns, not survey data.

FAQ

What does a design quality engineer do? Ensures the design process meets quality and regulatory requirements: requirements, risk, verification, validation, reviews and design transfer.

What is a product quality engineer? A quality engineer responsible for a product’s quality across its life, including launch, field performance and changes.

Which certification suits design quality engineers? CQE for broad quality engineering, CRE for reliability-focused roles.

Are design quality engineers in demand in medical devices? Design controls remain central under the QMSR, so the role is a core part of device quality teams.

What is the career path? Senior design quality engineer, then product quality or quality engineering manager.
