What supplier quality does
Supplier quality engineers (SQEs) make sure that purchased materials, components and services meet requirements before they reach production. ASQ describes the Certified Supplier Quality Professional as someone who “works with an organization’s supply chain and suppliers to continuously improve performance of key system components,” tracking data, identifying improvement projects and managing cross-functional implementation.
Typical responsibilities
| Supplier Quality Engineer | Supplier Quality Manager |
|---|---|
| Qualify new suppliers and parts (audits, first-article, PPAP or equivalent) | Set supplier quality strategy, policies and approval criteria |
| Investigate supplier nonconformances and issue corrective action requests | Own the approved supplier list and risk-based audit schedule |
| Monitor supplier scorecards and incoming quality | Negotiate quality agreements with key suppliers |
| Conduct on-site supplier audits | Manage a team of SQEs and escalate strategic supplier issues |
| Review supplier change notifications | Report supplier performance to leadership |
In regulated industries
In pharmaceuticals, ICH Q10 says the quality system extends to outsourced activities and purchased materials: competence should be assessed before engaging a supplier, quality responsibilities defined in a written agreement and performance monitored (ICH Q10, Section 2.7). FDA’s 2016 guidance on quality agreements recommends agreements that define which party does what and who holds primary cGMP responsibility. Supplier quality teams usually own those agreements.
A day in the job
| Time | Typical activity |
|---|---|
| Morning | Review incoming inspection failures and supplier corrective action responses |
| Late morning | Call with a supplier on a recurring defect; agree containment |
| Afternoon | Prepare or travel for an on-site supplier audit |
| Late afternoon | Update scorecards; review supplier change notifications with engineering |
Managers spend more time on supplier risk reviews, contract and quality agreement negotiations, and team coordination.
Who you work with
- Procurement / sourcing: the closest partner; together you select and manage suppliers.
- Design and manufacturing engineering: for specifications and part approvals.
- Receiving inspection: for incoming data.
- Suppliers’ quality teams: daily communication.
- Regulatory affairs: when supplier changes affect filings.
Busy periods
Typical patterns rather than measured statistics:
- New product introductions and supplier onboarding, when many parts need approval at once.
- Supply disruptions and second-source qualification, when alternate suppliers must be approved quickly.
- Annual supplier audit cycles, often front-loaded early in the year.
- Regulatory or customer audits that sample supplier files.
Travel can be significant, especially for global supply chains.
Skills you need
- Auditing skills and knowledge of the relevant standard (ISO 9001, IATF 16949, ISO 13485, GMP)
- Part approval methods (PPAP, first-article inspection)
- Root cause analysis and corrective action management
- Negotiation and relationship management
- Risk-based supplier segmentation
Salary and job outlook
BLS has no supplier quality category. SQEs are engineers, so the closest public benchmark is industrial engineers (median $102,440 in May 2025, 12% projected growth). Supplier quality managers fall within the industrial production manager group, which includes quality control systems managers (median $126,060). ASQ’s 2024 survey reported a $115,000 median across all quality professionals.
Recommended certification: ASQ CSQP
- Eligibility: 8 years’ experience, at least 3 in decision-making roles (no management title required); degree waivers up to 5 years.
- Exam: computer-based 165 questions (150 scored), about 4.5 hours; paper 150 questions in 4 hours.
- Renewal: every 3 years with 18 recertification units (ASQ).
SQEs often hold CQE as well; managers frequently add CMQ/OE.
Career path
- Quality Engineer or Receiving Inspection lead → Supplier Quality Engineer
- Senior SQE (strategic or global suppliers)
- Supplier Quality Manager
- Director of Supplier Quality or Quality Director
Some SQEs move into procurement or supply chain management.
Checklist: what hiring managers look for
- Supplier audits led, not just attended
- Part approval or first-article experience
- Supplier corrective actions driven to closure
- Knowledge of quality agreements in regulated industries
- CSQP or CQE
How AskDona helps
Supplier files are thick: audit reports, certificates, quality agreements, corrective actions and scorecards. AskDona reads a supplier file against your approval procedure and regulations and shows what is current, what is missing or expired, and where a quality agreement is silent, with citations to the page. Run a sample supplier file evidence review on a critical supplier. AskDona shows the evidence; your supplier quality team decides.
Editor’s note: Pay figures come from broader BLS categories because supplier quality is not reported separately. ICH Q10 and FDA’s quality agreement guidance apply to pharmaceuticals; other industries have their own supplier controls. Busy periods are typical patterns, not survey data.
FAQ
What does a supplier quality engineer do? Qualifies suppliers and parts, audits suppliers, manages corrective actions and monitors supplier performance.
What is the difference between an SQE and a supplier quality manager? The engineer handles suppliers and parts directly; the manager sets strategy, owns the approved supplier list and leads the SQE team.
What certification is best for supplier quality? ASQ CSQP, which requires 8 years’ experience (reduced with degree waivers).
Do supplier quality engineers travel? Often, for on-site audits, especially with overseas suppliers.
How much do supplier quality engineers make? The closest BLS benchmark is the $102,440 median for industrial engineers in May 2025.
